Once upon a time, in a small Japanese town in the mountains north of Tokyo, there lived four girls. Their names were Heart, Flower, Sugar, and Shizuka. They were in the eighth grade at Yamanouchi Middle School, a public school just off the center of town, where the car traffic quiets and students can still ride their bikes safely to school. It backs up onto green mountains with trails and small waterfalls.
The girls had lived there all their lives, and had known each other from elementary school onward. However, they had been in different classes at school, which meant that they actually had not been together much in school. The fact is, the girls were all members of a local swim club, and that was the beginning of their story.
