Every Saturday and Sunday I'll be focusing on one of my passions: music.
As is my nature, I love a mishmash of genres, the same way that I myself am a mishmash of cultures. Larkin Poe is modern but roots-y, and these wonderful sisters, Rebecca and Megan Lovell. They named their duo “Larkin Poe” after an ancestor–they are, apparently, descendants of Edgar Allen Poe.
I am a sucker for great musicianship, and these ladies are absolutely virtuosic. Do you think that word is used too often nowadays? I've posted their iconic song, “Don't” above. Take a listen. They've got so many great pieces available to listen to/watch on the internet, between social media and YouTube, it's hard to know what to include. Their YouTube channel features a series that they call “Tip o' the Hat.” Here's their description:
Welcome to Larkin Poe's “Tip o' The Hat” video series. To build a fire of creativity, you need fuel. As artists, we aspire to keep learning the songs that move and inspire us. Art begets art. While we’re at it, we want you to share in the experience — these are some of the songs that have shaped us.
Here's a video from the series–it almost looks like it's from their bedroom:
I count these ladies as some of my most important influences. Don't let convention box you in.
